What You Need to Know about the Deer Mice Epidemic in Southern Ontario

Scratching or gnawing noises in the walls, droppings left behind, and tiny shadows skirting around your baseboards—when you know you’ve got mice, you know. That being said, it’s very possible to have mice in the home and not notice. This can pose a problem when it comes to deer mice and the risks they pose to your home and health. Here’s what you need to know about the current deer mouse epidemic in Southern Ontario.

How to Spot Deer Mice

There are many signs of a mouse in the house including droppings, urine, chewed insulation, scratching noises, old nests, an ammonia-like smell, and more. Deer mice, however, have their own set of physical descriptors that set them apart from other mice.

Upon inspection, a deer mouse has a light grey colour to its fur with white fur on its belly. The deer mouse is a small mouse at only 8–10cm long, not including its tail. Though its fur may vary in colour, its white underbelly and white hands are the more distinguishable feature of this mouse.

Deer Mice in the Home

Anyone who has ever dealt with a mouse problem in the home or office knows that mice are very clever animals. Thanks to their flexible body shape, these furry critters only need a hole the size of a dime to invade a home. Entering small spaces is no challenge for the deer mouse: it can enter a building through cracks in the walls, floors, and even the foundation. What’s more, drainage pipes that aren’t properly sealed can offer a direct route into your home.

How Deer Mice Grow

It comes as no surprise that the deer mouse is a quick multiplier: due to the deer mouse’s ability to populate quickly, a small rodent issue can quickly turn into a full-blown infestation over just a short period of time. One pair of mice can have 5–6 litters per year with 6–8 babies in each litter. When you do the math, this means that in just one year, a two-mouse situation can turn into an infestation with over 100 mice.

When faced with a deer mouse epidemic and the associated health risks, there’s no time to spare. With a growing mouse population on your hands, you’ll want to contact the humane wildlife removal specialists for a thorough evacuation and permanent resolution to the mice in your home.

Health Risks

Mice might look small and harmless, but deer mice in particular are the biggest spreaders of a serious respiratory illness called hantavirus. Hantavirus can cause severe illness in humans, and it isn’t hard to contract. In fact, you can contract hantavirus simply from inhaling virus particles that infect the air. These particles can enter the air just from stirring up rodent waste when vacuuming or sweeping.

Humans can also contract hantavirus through touching objects or eating food that has been contaminated by the waste of an infected deer mouse or deer mouse saliva. A person could also contract the infection after a bite from an infected rodent (though this is a rare way to become infected). Luckily, hantavirus can’t be spread from person to person.

Humane Removal Options

Working with the right wildlife removal company is the key to staving off infection when it comes to the risks posed by deer mice in Southern Ontario. The good news is that deer mice can, and should, be removed humanely. Only through complete home eviction, prevention, and decontamination can you guarantee that all the mice are removed and all potential health risks eradicated.

Wildlife experts won’t waste your time with traps or poisons. These ineffective and needlessly cruel methods of wildlife control only provide temporary relief without getting at the root cause of the mouse issue. Humane wildlife removal experts will determine the points of entry and assess damage, cleaning up the mess so you don’t have to.
