See Mice Trails And Soffit-Line Entry Points At Brantford Inspection

On this day we were called out to Brantford for a mice control and prevention job. The homeowners knew full well they had mice problems and wanted a complete inspection with full prevention done to their home.

The homeowners started seeing signs they had mice problems by seeing mice footprints in the snow, to and from their home.

In the video below, you’ll be able to see the small trails, and you can actually see where the one mouse jumped across the snow. Another sign these were mice trails, is that you can see a thin trail in the snow between the footprints which was his or her tail.

We knew it wasn’t a squirrel from the trails because squirrel tails will leave a more fluffy and randomized tail trails, as mice tail trails are clean and distinct. There were the mice tracks right in front of us, leading right up to the side of the home.

How did these mice get into the home and attic?

Mice will crawl up the exterior of a home to get into an attic. As an example of their entry point in the image above, they tend to make their entry into a home by crawling up the walls and entering via the soffit-line.

If the gap between the soffit-line was never close enough to the wall in the first place, or if time has increased the gap, mice will get in; not only can mice get in this way, but so can bats. Both these animals are able to get into holes around or even smaller than the size of a dime.

As our inspection was just getting started, we were yet aware of all the mice entry points but once we discovered them, we planned for a complete eviction of the them through 1-way doors, and full exclusion setup. You can read information on how our 1-way door exclusion process works here.

Watch the video of the inspection below

In part 2 of the video, you’ll see a few more examples of mice tracks in the snow, going to and fro from the home to various parts in the backyard and around the home. You’ll be able to see where the mice tracks show they have left the home through their entry point, and ventured into the backyard, specifically to a backyard barbecue.

What the mice are looking for in that snowy backyard barbecue are remnants of food that may have been left behind. If they find traces of food grime or grease, they’ll happily eat that up (usually lick it depending on it’s state), look for more food and make their way back into your home, and into their nest.

Statistics on where mice dwell in the home the most

Approximately 80% of mice and rat intrusions don’t manifest in the common areas of homes, but end up in the attic or garage. When a mouse problem is left un-checked, and not brought under control, the warmth of the home will enable them to live long and happily, and venture out into the open world for food and water as they please.

Here are some statics based on our many years of experience in the mice control industry:

As a general rule, mice like to stay as far away from any threats to their nest and their babies so if you see one in the common areas it’s probably lost, confused or is so hungry and brazen for food that it disregards the common threats of being seen altogether.

Please note the above chart isn’t 100% accurate and solely based on our experience as a company, but it’s pretty accurate. With respect to the mice found in common areas, it’s probably even lower than 5% but these are our generalized findings.

The only way to stop mice and rats in their tracks is through complete eviction and full prevention after an inspection. Your health and the value of your home depend on it. If you think you have a mice problem, feel free to contact experts in the wildlife removal industry so you can rest assured the job will be done right, once, the first time.
