10 Things You Shouldn’t Do if There’s Wildlife Living in Your Home

If you suspect or know that there is an animal living in your home, stay calm and call the experts. There are humane ways to deal with wildlife that will minimize the impact to your home and keep you safe. But until the experts arrive, here are some tips on what to avoid doing.

1. Come into Contact with the Animal

You may come across different furry animals that you or someone in your homeis tempted to pet, but you must not touch them for your own safety. Several animals carry diseases and you could put yourself at risk if you touch them. Wildlife living in your home is a nuisance, but it is not worth risking your health to take the situation into your own hands.

2. Use Your Bare Hands

If due to urgent circumstances, you need to handle the animal, you must wear gloves! This added protection could prevent exposure to dangerous diseases. This rule also applies to their bodily fluids like urine and droppings.

3. Feed the Animal

If you have a soft spot for animals, you may be tempted to feed them until you are able to relocate them outside your home. Avoid this urge at all costs! You do not want to make the wildlife living in your home feel more comfortable and stick around longer.

4. Leave Food Out

It’s one thing to intentionally feed an animal, but some people feed them unintentionally. Don’t leave food out that an animal can easily access. Make sure all your food is properly put away and out of reach.

5. Harm the Animal

Reputable wildlife control services can work with you to relocate the animals with minimal harm. Even if you are frustrated,do not hurt the animal, as you could also be putting yourself at risk. Further, if you killed an animal living in the walls, they could rot and begin to stink.

6. Perform Major Renovations

Animals may find their way into your home through holes or other points of entry. Starting a major renovation project could create more opportunities for wildlife to get in. Wait for an animal control technician to assess your home first.

7. Create New Ways for Animals to Enter

If you see that an animal has scratched through your screen and is hiding somewhere in your home, use caution before opening another gateway like a window until you have had an inspection.

8. Allow Your Pets to Interact with the Animals

Just as you can become sick from animal diseases, you do not want to expose your pet to diseases either. Do what you can to keep your pets safe and protected from interactions with the wildlife living in your home.

9. Let Tree Branches Lead into Your Windows

Looking out onto some green leaves through your window may be your ideal image for your home, but be cautious if branches are near or touching your windows. Branches are an easy way for animals like squirrels to find their way into your home.

10. Ignore the Signs

While it’s important to avoid acting rashly, you also don’t want to ignore the signs of wildlife living in your home. Get in touch with an animal control technician as soon as possible to see what you can do to humanely remove the animal from your home.
