Attic insulation damage due to squirrelsCambridge Ontario can get quite cold in the winter time, and at temperatures dipping to minus 25, if you have a squirrel problem, you are bound to find out about it sooner or later.

During this job, we were looking at a house where the home owner suspect she had a squirrel problem. Generally, we can’t tell right away where the nests are located or where they’ve done any damage to the attic, but in this case the problem was more than obvious.

Take a look at the image of the home carefully. Take note of the plumes of steam whirling around the air vents and on the rest of the surface of the roof.

You can see where the snow is stable and visible on the roof, which is a sign that the insulation is holding well at those parts. At the other sections of the roof where the snow has obviously melted, the heat has come into the attic from the top floor and heating it so much that it’s melting the snow on the roof, and evaporating any moisture it comes into contact with.

The proof of squirrels

Through our years of experience in the removal industry, we had a really strong hunch that this was indeed a squirrel problem, but we felt it would be a good idea to get some further proof from the outside. You’ll see from the video below, that a shot of the front of the home showed several footprints in the snow which lead directly to the roof-soffit intersection. The roof-soffit intersection is one of the sections of a roof that is more prone to wildlife intrusions and is commonly found to be the culprit during our inspections.

Watch the video below to check out the whole scene in action:

That’s pretty dramatic right? The problem with wildlife intrusions is two-fold: most home owners don’t understand that wildlife damage can severely decrease the value of a home, and decrease safety. The second is that regular wildlife inspections are actually important factors in the general up-keep of a home.

If you take a look at our list of previous articles, you’ll find a slew of evidence of how preemptive wildlife prevention can save a home owner thousands of dollars. The message is simple: inspect now, and save money later.

If you’ve discovered you may have an insulation problem in your attic, and are considering calling out a professional company for a thorough inspection of a potential wildlife issue, you can view one of our recent articles where another home in Cambridge had a wildlife issue, and see how the removal process is done. Or you can read up on exactly how squirrel removal and control should be done.

It doesn’t take much, but when it comes to ensuring wildlife don’t get back into your home, you must make sure you’ve done your research for a reputable wildlife removal company. Your wallet will thank you later!
