CONFIRMING IT'S SQUIRRELS

IDENTIFYING NOISES

It’s easy to see how many people think squirrels are just cute little animals. They run and dance around our treetops and playfully prance around our neighborhoods. That’s all fun and games until you have a family move into your attic. Squirrels are one of the most populous species of all the common urban pests we encounter which increases the odds of them breaking into your home for shelter.

The most common sign you will encounter indicating the presence of squirrels will be noises. Specifically scurrying and chewing sounds. These pests will keep similar hours to us, therefore you are most likely to hear them first thing in the morning or around dusk. Squirrels will most often take up refuge in your attic, therefore you may hear scurrying noises as they come and go. You may also hear chewing sounds coming from the ceiling, walls or attic. Because their teeth never stop growing, these critters are constantly chewing in order to file down their teeth. This, if left unchecked is not only a growing expense but also a potential fire risk. If they get their teeth into any wiring, an electrical is a realistic possibility. This must be avoided at all costs.

Other sounds are specific to mating season (winter months) and birthing their litters (early spring). When squirrels mate it may sound more aggressive and vocal than the typical sounds exhibited. Once their kits are born, both the mother and the babies will be much more vocal.

Have a look the video below to hear what a squirrel sounds like:

TIME OF YEAR

Squirrel activity will increase drastically in the fall as well as the springtime. Mating season typically happens twice for squirrels. The first one is around December-January, with the litters being born in February – March. The second mating season occurs in late summer, around July – August with the litters being born in September- October.

The other busy tie of year is when the cold weather approaches. These days it varies, but you can rest assured that as soon as the temperatures drop, squirrels will be much more active and motive ted to find shelter for the winter months.

During this time of year, please keep an eye and an ear out for any signs these pests have targeted your home. It is much simpler and cheaper to resolve the issue if caught immediately.

HOW WE EVICT THEM

Inspection

The first step is to have one of our technicians complete an inspection. We can’t even speculate as to what may be involved in resolving your issue until a technician physically sets eyes on the place. Each house and each case is completely unique and require an completely unique approach.

Our technicians are experienced and highly trained wildlife professionals. With over 50 years combined experience in house, our team will be able to provide you with all the answers you need.

The inspection will take about 30 minutes and involves a thorough examination of all affected areas. Our technician will thoroughly inspect the exterior of the structure, get up on the roof and inspect the roof line, roof vents and plumbing vents and finally, we will have a look in the attic and any other relevant areas, such as garages and sheds.

Upon completion, we will sit down with you and go over our findings in detail, after which you will be presented with an itemized quote for all the suggested preventative measures.

SQUIRREL REMOVAL PROCESS

Our method involves the use of a one-way door system which allows the squirrels to leave on their own once things quiet down and everyone is gone. We seal up every possible entry point and place a one-way door in the area it used to enter your building.

The animal’s body weight will press down a lever allowing the animal to exit, this lever will snap back up behind it locking it out permanently. Your houseguest will typically leave during the first night.

Once the animal is successfully evicted we return to remove the door and seal up the area.

PREVENTION MEASURES

It’s important to take certain steps to ensure you will not be dealing with this issue again down the road. Once squirrels have broken in successfully, they will try their best to get back in. Any babies born on your property will instinctively return to try and have their litters as well. It’s important you take all steps to secure the building to avoid another break-in.

We seal off all possible entry points. Reinforce any problem areas and offer you a lifetime warranty, thus ensuring your peace of mind and confidence in the fact this issue is dealt with permanently. Lastly, we decontaminate the affected area, riding the surfaces of the squirrel’s hormonal scent. This drastically reduces the chances of new wildlife picking up the scent and attempting and join the party.

Have a look at this video; squirrels don’t need much space to enter into your home:

CLEAN UP AND DECONTAMINATION

Our team will clean up the affected areas, removing any debris, or mess left by the animals. More often than not this is sufficient. We will also replace soffit panels, roof vents, etc as long as the materials are provided and made available on the day the work is being completed.

If repairs need to be completed beyond the scope of our expertise, we work with several local contractors and can make some recommendations if necessary.

As for decontamination of affected areas after removal of raccoons, this is only necessary in more extreme instances. Our technician will address this during the initial inspection if need be.

DANGERS

PROPERTY DAMAGE

After your families health, damage to your home is next biggest risk posed by a squirrel break-in. Through either breaking in or trying to break out, squirrels can wreak havoc on our attic, garage or shed.

Do not attempt to seal of an entry point if you see one. Trapping an animal in a structure will only lead to two possible outcomes. A new exit whole created, and much more collateral damage as the trapped critter panics to get out, or the animal will perish if it can not get out.

Next potential disaster is if a mother squirrel has her litter in your structure. This happens between Feb-March and again Around Sept-Oct. It makes an awful mess, they will use materials found in the occupied space for nesting materials. Furthermore, the birthing process is very messy.

The fun does not end there. It’s highly possible you will have to co-exist with the young family until the kits are mobile. This will take several weeks. It’s best to react quickly and have the animals professionally removed before they have an opportunity to give birth.

CONTAMINATION AND DISEASE

Another significant risk squirrels pose to humans is infecting us with one of several diseases they could potentially be carrying. There are several ways they can transmit the virus to other animals, including humans.

These diseases can be contracted either through feces and urine, bites or scratches. It can be airborne through bacteria in feces and urine, consumed through contaminated food or transferred through contact with an infected animal.

As the urban squirrel population continues to grow, so will the instances of interactions with these animals.

Diseases carried by squirrels which pose a risk to humans include Leptospirosis and the Bubonic Plague. Suffice it to say if you suspect you have squirrels in your attic, garage or shed, contact us immediately for an estimate.
