Squirrel baby season takes place twice a year—from February to April, and then again between August and September. During this period, the mother will actively seek out a warm and safe place to take care of her babies until they are able to survive on their own. For this reason, you’re much more vulnerable to squirrel infestation during this time of year.

A litter of squirrels can have anywhere from two to eight babies. Mothers raise their babies alone, meaning that it’s unlikely you’ll see male squirrels lingering around your home. If you see an adult female squirrel in or around your home during this time however, you can be fairly sure she’s found a way inside and has babies somewhere on the premises.

When baby squirrels are born, they are completely helpless. They are born blind and deaf and are completely dependent on their mother for the first seven to eight weeks of their lives. Even after they’re able to manage on their own, they’ll still stick with their mothers for quite some time before branching out. That means that even if squirrel baby season is over, they may still be lingering on your property.

Where They Nest

Squirrels will typically nest in small, enclosed areas that offer easy access to the outdoors. The attic is one of the most common spaces to find a mother squirrel and her babies. They also often build nests in vents that are unscreened and trim boards that are loose or rotten. These spaces allow them to move freely from the inside to the outside of your property.

As the mother creates a warm nesting place for her babies, she’ll likely drag in nesting materials from outdoors, or forage for materials she can use from your home. Nesting materials include leaves, twigs, cloth, and insulation.

What You’ll Hear

From the baby squirrels, you’ll hear the sound of squeaking and crying, although it will be fairly faint. It’s more likely that you’ll hear the sound of the mother entering and leaving the premises to forage for food. The sound of scampering, scratching, or gnawing are all sounds you might pick up during their stay.

If you’re hearing scratching noises behind the walls, it’s likely due to a squirrel having fallen and being unable to get back out. Squirrels are diurnal animals, meaning that the bulk of the noise they make will be heard during the day when they’re most active.

Dangers of Infestation

While baby squirrels are very cute, having wildlife living in your home for an extended period of time is never a good idea. As they grow bigger, they’ll begin to scratch and gnaw at the interior of your home, doing significant damage in the process.

One of the biggest dangers comes from their tendency to chew through electrical wires running through your home. Loose wiring that is left dangling in small spaces is a serious fire hazard. Squirrels are also carriers of disease, many of which can be harmful to humans. These diseases are most frequently transmitted through squirrel waste, including feces, urine, and saliva. You should never attempt to make physical contact with a squirrel. Instead, call a wildlife removal company.

What You Should Do

If you’ve made an inspection of your home and come to the conclusion that you have squirrels living on your property, you need to contact a wildlife removal company immediately.

Attempting to remove the squirrels on your own can be dangerous. As mentioned previously, baby raccoons can’t survive without their mothers. Wildlife removers ensure that squirrels are removed in the most humane way possible, without harming the babies. However, they do need to be removed, especially because of their potential to do serious damage and to cause disease.
