It starts off as one or two mice gaining entry in your home. But soon, those mice start to spread their pheromones all over the place, which attracts more of the pests. These mice mate, and babies are born. Those babies grow up quickly and start their own mating cycles. Soon, you have a full-blown mouse infestation on your hands.

Here are some of the top telltale signs you have a mouse in your home.

1. Droppings

Have you found organic material that looks like mouse droppings? If so, don’t just clean it up and go about your day. This is one of the most obvious signs you have a mouse. These droppings are dark and small, about three to eight millimetres in length.

They’ll be scattered around your home randomly. Often, though, you’ll find these droppings in your attic, in your insulation, along skirting, even inside or on top of your cupboards.

2. Grease marks

Mice usually take the same routes to get to and from areas in your home while foraging. They’ll stay close to the walls to avoid danger. Look closely at the bottom of your walls and on the floor. If you see dark smears around corners or holes, you likely have mice in the home. These are grease marks caused by their bodies brushing up against the walls while they’re on the move.

3. Noises

One of the most common reasons homeowners reach out to us is because they’re hearing strange sounds. These sounds might come from their ceilings, in their lofts, in their walls, or under floorboards.

Sometimes, the noise you hear is just the wind. Sometimes, strange sounds in your attic are an indication of a completely different type of wildlife problem. But often, these noises signal the presence of mice in the home.

How can you tell the difference?

Mice in particular will make very light skittering sounds as they move around. They’ll also make scratching and gnawing noises, too.

If you’re dealing with a mouse, these sounds will be most commonly heard at night and when the house is quiet. This is when mice will come out of hiding because there’s a lesser chance of danger.

If you can pinpoint a place on the wall or ceiling where the noise is coming from, tap on it. If the sound stops for a few moments and then starts up again, it’s certain you have mice in the home you need to get rid of.

4. Nests

Mice build nests and they’ll use easy-to-shed soft materials to make them. If your possessions, such as clothing or paper, seem to be torn and shred, it’s possible a mouse found them and used them for nest building.

If you’ve found a strange collection of such materials, either under the fridge, in a cupboard, in your attic, or elsewhere, you’ve likely found a mouse’s nest.

5. Footprints

If you’re seeing animal footprints that don’t belong to your pets, you surely have something living with you in your home! You may be able to clearly see rodent tracks as well as tail marks in dusty unused areas of your home, such as lofts and basements.

If you suspect you have mice in the home, you can also sprinkle flour or talcum powder in your attic and other areas of your home. The presence of fresh tracks on the flour or powder the next day will help you determine if you have a mouse problem.
